Friday, November 25, 2011

Fri Nov 25 - Weekend Homework

Weekend Homework: On the Area of a Circle Sheet do #17, 18, 20, 21, 25, 26.  You can do others as bonus.
Overdue:  Do blue GESNERGuide and do the following questions about Ms. Gesner's bike.

Problem:  Ms. Gesner's bike tire has a radius of 35cm.
a) What is the circumference of her bike tire?
b) If she lives 1.2 kilometers from the school, how many times does her wheel turn on her way to school?
c) Mr. Wanie has a fancy cycling computer that allows you to make adjustments to the radius of your tire.  What factors might influence the exact radius of the outside of a bicycle tire?

Basic Rules for Gesner-ify your Math solutions are:
1. READ the problem carefully (out loud if possible)

2. RECORD all information you might need (and the date and page number!!)
     ex: C = 2.3 m     1000 m = 1km

3.  DRAW a diagram if appropriate

4. WRITE OUT FORMULA(E)
     ex: C = Π · d

5.  FILL IN information in the formula.  Include all units.

6.  USE TRIANGULAR FORM to show all steps
      ex: C = Π · d
               = 3.14 · 2.3m
               = 7.222m

7.   Write a SENTENCE about your answer if it was a word problem.  Draw a BOX around all other answers.

Thurs Nov 24, 2011 Calculating the Area of a Circle

Today we went to the computer lab to research ways to find the area of a circle.
http://www.education2000.com/demo/demo/botchtml/areacirc.htm
http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=YokKp3pwVFc

The Egyptian Method:  Draw a large square around the circle.  The length of one side is equal to the diameter.  Divide the large square into 9 small squares.  The circle covers approximatly 7/9 (seven ninths) of the circle.  So A= 7/9 * d

HW - Draw a diagram for #4 and #5 on "How can we calculate the area of a circle?"

Do Ms. Gesner's Bike HW problem from yesterday if you didn't already do it.

Wednesday, November 23, 2011

2. RECORD all information you might need
     ex: C = 2.3 m     1000 m = 1km
3.  DRAW a diagram if appropriate
4. WRITE OUT FORMULA(E)
     ex: C = Π · d
5.  FILL IN information in the formula.  Include all units.
6.  USE TRIANGULAR FORM to show all steps
      ex: C = Π · d
               = 3.14 · 2.3m
               = 7.222m
7.   Write a SENTENCE about your answer if it was a word problem.  Draw a BOX around all other answers.

Oct 4 - Using Prime Factoring to find the LCM (Lowest Common Multiple) and GCF (Greatest Common Factor)

Today we looked at how to use Prime Factoring to find the LCM (Lowest Common Multiple) and GCF (Greatest Common Factor) of two numbers.

For example
8 = 2 x 2 x 2
12 = 2 x 2 x 3
Their GCF 4.  It is the product of the prime factors they have in common  2 x 2
Their LCM is 24.  It is the product of the prime factors they share (2 x 2) times all of the factors they don't share (x 2 x3).  So their LCM is 2 x 2 x 2 x 3

Homework:  1.3 Questions #1 and #2.
1.1 and 1.2 are overdue.

Friday, September 30, 2011

Fri Sept 30 - Prime factoring

Mon Sept 26 - Exponents & Divisibility

Today we corrected "1.6 Square Roots"

We learned that:
Squared means to the exponent 2
Cubed means to the exponent 3

We learned that numbers are divisible:
By 2 - If they are even
By 5  - If they end in 5 or 0
By 4 - If the last two digits of the number are divisible by 4
For examples one million, one hundred twenty-four thousand and twenty-four (1,124,024) *is* divisible by four because the last two digits (24) is divisible by 4.

HW - 1)  Finish "1.4 Calculating Powers"
2)  Use the internet to find the divisibility rule for 3 and for 9. On the same piece of paper as the notes you took in class write a sentence to explain the rule and give an example.

Thursday Sept 8, 2011 - WELCOME.

Welcome to Ms. Gesnerville!
This website is used for Class 8-8 Math.

Today, Sept 8th, we began a review of basic calculations (addition, subtraction and multiplication).

We discussed problem solving strategies:
1) Make sure you understand the problem
2) Solve the easiest part of a problem first
3) Use real world objects or your imagination of a real-life situation
4) Make a chart.
5) Draw a picture.

As a group we took a look at a problem involving LOCKERS.  In this problem there are 70 lockers in a hallway.

Today we looked at a problem involving lockers. The scenario was:

1) Ben opens all 70 lockers.
2) Maple comes along and closes every second locker.
3) Con arrives and changes the position of every third locker (If the locker is open, he closes it, if closed, he opened it.)
4) Maeghan changes the position of every fourth locker.
5) Dan changes every 5th...
6) Robi-Ann changes the 6th etc. etc. etc.

WHAT PATTERN WILL EMERGE AT THE END??

HW - Make sure that your Letter to Ms. Vohra meets all of these criteria.

Based on the attendance at past events, Jennifer and Steve's committee believe that between 20 and 25% of the 80 people invited will not attend. As secretary of the Fundraising Committee, write a report tot the faculty advisor, Ms. Vohra, recommending on of the three locations.

Suppot your recommendation by including the following elements in your report:
* the approximate number of guests who are expected to attend.
* the algebraic expressions that give the costs at each location for n guests
* the cost at each location for the estimated number of guests
* graphs and/or tables to show the range in the number of guests for which your recommendation offers the lowest cost.
* possible reasons why the location offering the lowest cost might not be the best choice.

Monday, January 17, 2011

Monday Jan 17, 2011

Today we learned how to SOLVE and CHECK simple algebraic equations.

For example:
SOLVE:
x - 12 = 9 (Think: What can I do to both sides to get x by itself?)
x - 12 +12 = 9 +12 (Add twelve to both sides)
x = 19 (Since -12+12 is zero, they cancel each other out)

CHECK: x - 12 = 19 (Copy out the original equation)
19 - 12 = 19 (Substitute the answer you got above)
19 = 19 ☺ (Be sure to give yourself a smiley face or check mark if correct!)
