Sell Me Your Packaging - Write-up

Today we will be in the computer lab so that you can type up the information for your video, website or poster.

You need to include:
OUR PACKAGING
___ what your packaging is for, and why it is an excellent design
___ the name of your polyhedron (ex. Pentagonal prism, octagonal pyramid)
___ the number of faces  & vertices

SURFACE AREA
___ the total surface area of your polyhedron and an explanation of how you calculated it

VOLUME
___ the total volume of the package and a brief explanation of how you calculated it.  How do you know your answer is reasonable?

FUTURE IDEAS
___ changes you might make to your packaging design in the future

Bonus:
___ Information about your company
___ More than one version of your packaging (different sizes, different designs)

Sell me your Packaging!

Today we talked about WHY we measure (so we can compare things, build things, make things, sell things).
Now on to something creative!

Sell me your Packaging! (A Measurement Project)
Every day companies design new packages to hold their products.  Your task is to use your knowledge of NETS, SURFACE AREA and VOLUME to create a package for the product of your choice.

Steps for Success

q
1.       You may work alone or with a partner or in a group of three. You must be able to work productively together and you must be able to get together outside of school time.
Names of Team members:
Company Name:
q
2.       NETS PRACTICE
q Produce 2 rough drafts of nets on cm2 graph paper.
q Label the area of each part of the shape
q Calculate the total area of each one in cm2
q Show Ms. Gesner
q
3.       VOLUME PRACTICE
q Build 1 or more 3D shapes out of cm3 blocks.
q Explain to Ms. Gesner how to find the volume of a prism.
q
4.       EXPLORATION
q Print 2 or more polyhedron nets  Name polyhedron #1: ______________________________
                                                                                                                           #2: ______________________________
q
5.       CLASS DISCUSSION
q Discuss which teams will build each net
q
6.       BUILD POLYHEDRON OUT OF CARDBOARD
q Calculate volume in cm3 if possible.  PACKAGE VOLUME = _________________
q Write a short paragraph about how you calculated or estimated your volume
q
7.       DRAW A NET ON CM2 GRAPH PAPER
q Calculate the area of each part of the net.
q Calculate the surface area of your net.     SURFACE AREA = ________________

8.       MAKE FINAL PACKAGING
q Decorate your polyhedron to make it resemble packaging
q
9.       PRESENT YOUR FINDINGS
q Design a website, poster or video that presents your packaging.  Make sure you include:
___ what your packaging is for, and why it is an excellent design
___ the name of your polyhedron (ex. Pentagonal prism, octagonal pyramid)
___ the number of faces  & vertices
___ a net of your packaging showing surface area calculations for each part of
            the shape
___ the total volume of the package
___ a brief explanation of how you calculated the volume
___ changes you might make to your packaging design in the future (Different
colours, materials etc. that you might use in the final product)
