1. What are 4 ways you could write this algebraic expression in English?
4n - 3
(remember that this can also be written 4 x n -3)
2. What are 4 ways you could write this algebraic expression.

(this can also be written n^2 + 9)
Not sure how to do this.... read the next post for clues.

Ways to write expressions in English
3n + 7
ex: seven more than three times a number
three times a number plus seven
three times a number increased by seven
three n increased by seven
the product of 3 and n plus seven
three times a number added to seven
a number tripled increased by seven
the sum of three times a number and seven
the sum of seven added to the product of three and n
n plus seven times three
seven more than three times a number
seven added to three n
seven added to three times number
b) x^2 - 5 (see side board)
ex: five less than a number squared
x squared minus five
five less than a number squared
a number squared decreased
x times x minus five
a number times itself with five taken away from it
x to the power of two decreased by five
the difference of x to the power of two and five
five less than a number to the exponent 2
x multiplied by itself take away 5.

#5a) n + 8 = the sum of a number and eight; a number increased by 8; the total of a number and 8; a number plus eight; eight added to a number; a number and eight;
b) 6a = six times a number; the product of six and number;
c) p/5 = one fifth of a number p; the quotient of a number and five; a number divided by 5; the ratio of a number and 5

Tues Jan 29
Today will quickly review:
What is a VARIABLE? A letter that represents a number. Maybe the number changes, maybe we don't know it yet.
What is an EXPRESSION? combines variables numbers 3 x n +6; x/3 -6
Why do we write expressions?
Translating English Words into Expressions
In your workbook divide a half page into chart with 4 sections
+
-
x
/ (Division symbol)
As you correct the homework from last night add words to your chart. Write words that have to do with Addition in the + section, write words that have to do with Subtraction in the - section and so on.
Last night's Homework Questions
#3. Write down the correct answer to questions #1-5 on a blank piece of paper. (You do not need to write down the question)

4. Play:

Copy down any 2 questions and their correct answers.
Tonight's homework
p 380 #1, #5, #6 (5 and 6 may already be finished!!)

PROJECT!!
Be
sure your project includes each part.
Make
sure you have had someone proofread
your rough drafts
Each
part of the project shows careful thought and planning.
___
your company name
___
optional: your biographies (use only initials on
websites)
___
your 3 questions (explaining
which question you chose and why)
___
how you completed your survey (what was
your sample size, when, where and how did you take your sample?)
___
a table of your results (include a column for percent)
___
graph(s) (with clear titles and labels)
___
your write-up about results/conclusions (What does
your data tell you? What did you do to make sure your data was
accurate/correct? Is there anything you would change if you did the survey
again? Who would want to buy your data? What for?
___ bonus:
Any projects (real or imaginary) that your company will do in the future

Math Project
This is your last class to work on your project together.
1. If you were sick, do SURVEY MONKEY below.
2. Make a CHART to show your data. Calculate percents. Save and/or print
3. Use Excel or Create a Graph to make a GRAPH. Save and/or print.
Be sure to include a title, axis labels!
4. Type up a paragraph or point form SUMMARY/CONCLUSIONS (What does your data tell you?)
5. Type up APPLICATIONS (Who would find your data useful, What for, What research might your "company" do next?)
6. Begin website, video or poster.
