Thurs Jan 20, 2011

Today we learned about how to use the DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY in order to EXPAND algebraic equations.

9(2k + 3l - 8m +2n) is the same as

18k + 24l - 72m + 18n

Homework. Finish Part 4 of the Assignment:
In Part 4, Question #2 and the "What if" are Bonus - Do these if you want a Level 4 or 4+ mark.

The assignment should be complete, neat, and ready to hand in.

Have a great long weekend!!

Monday Jan 17, 2011

Today we learned how to SOLVE and CHECK simple algebraic equations.

For example:
SOLVE:
x - 12 = 9 (Think: What can I do to both sides to get x by itself?)
x - 12 +12 = 9 +12 (Add twelve to both sides)
x = 19 (Since -12+12 is zero, they cancel each other out)

CHECK: x - 12 = 19 (Copy out the original equation)
19 - 12 = 19 (Substitute the answer you got above)
19 = 19 ☺ (Be sure to give yourself a smiley face or check mark if correct!)

Homework - Be sure you have finished Activity 1, Activity 2 and Activity 3 of the "Where should they hold the Fundraising Party?"

Thursday & Friday - Ms. Gesner sick

Students worked on the "Where Should the Fundraising Party Be Held" assignment with Ms D'Aguilar.

Fri Jan 7, 2011

Today we did an INTEGERS MINI-TEST

The we talked about solving algebraic equations.

HW - Show that you have spent at least 20 minutes on KenKen puzzles.

Thursday, January 6, 2011

Thurs Jan 6, 2011

We did a Pre-Test on BEDMAS involving INTEGERS.

Ms. Gesner made lots of mistakes on the board... and 8-8 was very good at catching them.

Quiz tomorrow - Extra help available after-school. Extra help = extra chocolate!

Wed Jan 5th, 2010

Today we did a neat algebra problem involving balances, and a code from Sherlock Holmes.

HW - #5,6,7,8 on Sheet 6.7; Mini-Quiz on Integers Friday

Today we reviewed: Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying and Dividing Integers

We reviewed the meaning of the words variable, term, expression and equation. http://www.mathsisfun.com/algebra/definitions.html

We did a tasty example using peppermint patties. Mmmmm.

HW: Finish all questions both sides of sheet 6.2 (Subtracting Integers); 6.6 (Dividing Integers)
